Happy CINCO de MAYOOOOO! Last week of school! One final Tuesday and one Thursday and I will OFFICIALLY be a JUNIOR!!!!! hahaha okay, we NEED to have a little discussion about this past week in music though......there are no wordsss! So the 2014 iHeart Radio Music Awards happened... and they were amazing! With performances by Shakira, Ariana Grande, Usher, and Pharrell Williams, there was a lot going on, and a lot of talent filling up that venue! I will include some performances below! Anyway, here are my picks this week! Enjoy :)

This is Michael Jackson's vocals from 1983 remastered with vocals from Justin Timberlake as well.......so pretty much the definition of musical perfection----AMIRITE?! Alright, alright. As I am nearing the end of my Spring semester, I am really trying to push through an stay as focused as I can. I keep telling myself only 3 more nights of homework!...and then just studying for 1 final and writing 1 paper AND I'M FREEEEEE.....at least until next semester. :/ haha

Okay, now I'm sure by now everyone has heard of Australian artist Iggy Azalea. Her music is just new, if you know what I mean. I've watched a few of her interviews, and you know when you just meet someone and think to yourself, "Wow, they're really cool," yea.....that's the case here. Here are a few of her songs, including the new single Ariana Grande dropped today! Really enjoying that right now too!
Today wasn't just another Monday on the calendar. Today marked the 118th Boston Marathon here in Beantown and it was obviously a special day in our city's history.
The city was filled with pride, respect, and resilience as runners ran 26.2 miles to the finish line located on Boylston St.
It was definitely emotional to be at the finish line this year, and even more exciting to cheer people on as they completed something so extraordinary. I will never forget some of the looks I saw from the runners as they took strides toward that line.
In honor of the marathon, here are some picks that I love running to!

This weekend Matt & Kim came to my campus to perform and of course I was there! It was incredible! One of my friends said that her brother had seen them before and was raving about their energy, but nothing could have prepared me for that show. They were electric, eye-catching, and the sight of pure enjoyment on stage. I posted a short clip on my instagram if you want to check that out! I saved the best for last! Okay, so earlier today, I saw Jack Harries (@JacksGap) tweet that he would be hosting a live Q&A session with Ed Sheeran at the Google HQ in central London. Lucky for me, my boss let me off work 30 minutes early so I was able to catch the live stream just in time! He was releasing his BRAND NEW single "Sing" off his new album Multiply. Not only was he extremely engaged in all of the twitter questions, but he was so friendly and nice to everyone in the studio. I know this sounds like it should be a given, but oftentimes it isn't. Sheeran even commented on this when asked about any advice he had for aspiring musicians:
"Always be nice to people because that is how the music industry works now. It doesn't work on who's the best. It works on who's got the best music and who's the nicest....Be nice. Write songs. Do gigs," said Sheeran

But now, let's talk about the single. I first heard this and thought to myself, "Okay, amazing as usual." Oh how wrong I was! This is not any typical Ed Sheeran track. His new sound is MY NEW OBSESSION and I cannot wait to hear more! He talked in the session above about working with producers such as Pharrell, which you know...might have something to do with it. He's okay I guess. A few radio hits here and there I suppose.......... . . . . . . .. ..... .. . . . . Incredible. YOU WILL LOVE IT

Okaaay, okay. I know I just posted about Sam Smith last week, but he just released this song off his new album "In the Lonely Hour" and it is already to #6 on the iTunes chart!!! Really looking forward to hearing the rest! :)
As I'm sure most of you are aware, ULTRA music festival happened this past weekend in Miami, FL and as I am from FL, many of my friends went. I follow Scooter Braun on instagram and saw him posting a lot about/with Martin Garrix, so obviously I looked into him:) I've actually featured him on my blog before with the well-known song "Animals." What I didn't know, however, is that he is from Amsterdam and he is 17! Definitely much more talent to come here!
Additionally, I really love the song "Cheap Sunglasses" by RAC. For some reason it's not available on YouTube, but you can download it for free on iTunes (Look for the Single of the Week)!
Also, I just wanted to bring up a topic for discussion that came up in my Sociology of Race & Ethnicity class today. This week's topic is Aesthetics: art, dance, music, etc. We talked a lot about how we develop certain tastes by way of certain environments we are involved in. For example, you are more likely to develop certain tastes for classical music in a household of higher socioeconomic status than lower. While this doesn't mean that it's impossible to develop these tastes, it does mean that you will be going against the current of your environment and upbringing.
....Naturally.... Miley Cyrus came up in our conversation lol. Truthfully, this "ratchet" (as it has been called) image that she has created, or evolved... is a little too in-your-face for me personally. However, having said this, I do think that she still has her music talent. She just isn't implementing them in the best way she could be (but again, this is my personal opinion).
After spending a solid 20 minutes discussing how Miley has racialized her image and inducted a new self departing from Hannah Montana for good, we moved onto the topic of rap music and how it is shaping youth today.

Last thing I promise! This weekend I went to a lecture by Dr. Chris Edmin of Columbia University as he talked about the relationship between Science and Hip-Hop. I've found a Ted Talk that pretty much summarizes what he does. Definitely check it out when you have time!

I hope you started your week off on the right foot! I know Mondays can be a pain, but the best way to have a good week is to stay positive and follow through by producing quality work and using your time wisely. I came across this quote on instagram last week that solidified this idea for me:

While watching the 2014 BRITs a few weeks ago, they mentioned Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) and I had also seen him in an instagram or two with Dan Smith (B∆STILLE). I noticed that he was nominated multiple times so looked up his stuff. Definitely one to look out for and keep an eye on. This artist has a true sense of musicality and one mental voice to go along with it. Here are a few of my favorites:
